King James (მეფე იაკობის) სახელი, ბიბლიის ინგლისური თარგმანის ერთ-ერთ ძველ გამოცემაში,
ნიშნავს მხოლოდ იმას, რომ ეს თარგმანი მეფე იაკობის განკარგულებით შესრულდა.
განკარგულება 1604 წელს გაიცა, პირველი გამოცემა კი 1611 წელს მოხდა.
იმ შვიდი წლის განმავლობაში თარგმანზე ექვს კომიტეტად დაყოფილი 47 სპეციალისტი მუშაობდა
ოქსფორდში, კემბრიჯში და უესტმინსტერში.
მუშაობისას ისინი ეყრდნობოდნენ უფრო ადრინდელ თარგმანებს (მეტწილად Tyndale’s) და ებრაულ/ბერძნულ დედნებს.
მიუხედავად იმისა, რომ მეფე იაკობის თარგმანი ყველაზე უფრო ცნობილია ინგლისურ თარგმანთა შორის,
ის არ არის პირველი. მანამდე იყო John Wycliffe’s Bible (მე-14 საუკუნე)
William Tyndale’s translation (მე-16 საუკუნის 20-30-იანი წლები)
ჟენევის ბიბლია (სახელი დაერქვა დაბეჭდვის ადგილის მიხედვით)
მეფე იაკობის ბიბლიის ტექსტზე მუშაობა საუკუნეზე მეტხანს გრძელდებოდა,
ათასობით მცირე და სინტაქსური შესწორება შევიდა და ასე შესწორებული,
1769 წელს ოქსფორდში გამოიცა.
შემდგომი გამოცემები (ფოტოზე წარმოდგენილის ჩათვლით),
სწორედ 1769 წლის გამოცემას ეყრდნობა.
